View Full Version : Mage Haste vs. Crit as Fire

Most of us follow Rawr for most gear decisions but I've been playing around with a couple ideas in my head.

One of the bigger initial concerns with fire over arcane was keeping the T10 2pc bonus at a higher uptime. Fireball is a significantly longer cast than Arcane Blast and Hot Streak procs a lot less than Missile Barrage.

Playing with the http://milamber.ch/spellhastecap.html (Spell Haste Cap Calculator), it takes 1140 haste to fit three fireballs into http://www.wowhead.com/spell=70753/pushing-the-limit (Pushing the Limit).

I'm currently at 63.2% crit raid buffed and still run into RNG issues with Hot Streak proccing enough.

My rationale is that on movement fights crit would be valued more as fire, to keep ignite at a higher uptime. Conversely, on more patchwerk type fights it would be more beneficial to have higher haste values.

On a different note, it seems that our damage was a bit lower due to the ICC buff increase. Herak and I talked about it a bit, and fire is higher DPM and the longer the boss is at 35%, the higher our output will be. Fights are also much shorter, and I was only able to use Mirror Images once, where before I was able to fit them in a second time. So I mostly attribute our dps loss to that. Once we get to 30% I wouldn't be surprised to see Arcane be better simply with shorter fight time/higher cooldown uptime.

I think at 30% it doesn't even matter if you raid as 0/0/0

That gives me an idea, we should try that as a raid!

Yeah I thought about this when we first went Fire. It's unfortunate, I can't fucking stand Arcane. I'll play around in RAWR to try and come up with some numbers.

Well I used to have little stickies with approximate cooldown usage based on our previous kill times. (wait for all cd's to pop again or use individually etc).

Arcane is definitely less fun to play, although getting good parses makes up for it. I'm usually more partial to whatever does more dps.

I'll be trying the 1140 haste idea out for a while to see if the extra haste makes up for the shorter fight times.

is that 1140 assuming all haste buffs? (ele shaman, boomkin)
