Sound
When using mumble, be prepared for some differences from other software:
- There isn't a delay of communication if someone's connection is bad. Mumble will degrade the quality of their voice down to something that can reach you as quickly as possible. They may sound like an ATARI, but you will hear them say "I'm lagging" right when it happens, instead of 45 seconds after the fact when everyone is already dead and nerd raging.
- Mumble adjusts sound quality of your voice based on your bandwidth. If you have a very low quality connection, your voice will sound worse than someone with a nicer connection. This is incredibly noticeable for people who like to download using torrents while gaming.
- Mumble can temporarily lower the volume of your applications for when people speak, or when you speak. You can specify one or the other, or both. Now you can blast Dragonforce out of your speakers and still hear the raid leader when they talk.
- Mumble will try to throttle the volume of people who are too loud. It also tries to boost people who are too quiet. Raid leader screaming at you to let you know that your firstborn will die? At least your speakers will live. Normalized volume is a great thing for everyone. This is something the audio wizard configures, so once again, do the audio wizard.
There are some tweaks to make mumble sound as good as possible, here is what I use:
- Launch mumble and go to Configure>Settings
- At the bottom left, click "Advanced"
- In the left menu go to Audio Input
- Interface: set Echo to Disabled
- Transmission: PTT: Audio Cue checked
- Audio Processing (how people hear you)
- Noise Suppression @ Off (raise if people complain about static. Noise suppression can make your voice have a metallic quality to it. Try raising it slightly if people complain about a noisy mic, but I like to keep it off.)
- Amplification: 1.00
- At this point, adjust your mic's volume using the Windows volume control , you'll sound better.
- Noise Suppression @ Off (raise if people complain about static. Noise suppression can make your voice have a metallic quality to it. Try raising it slightly if people complain about a noisy mic, but I like to keep it off.)
